Ocean Golf Course at the Ritz Carlton Resort, Half Moon Bay

Perched on a bluff high above the roaring Pacific with sea views delivered at every hole, The Ocean Course is aptly named and boasts some of the best final four finishing holes in golf. Opened in 1997, and designed by renowned landscape architect Arthur Hills, the golf course in San Francisco’s traditional "links style” design delivers "firm and fast” fairways. The wispy native grasses accenting the tees and the plaintive wail of the bagpipers who play at weekend sundown, join forces to transport players and guests alike back to the game’s origins in Scotland. In 2008, the course is one of the best courses in California and hosted the LPGA Samsung Golf Championship.

Alberto Savoia: Innovate for Personal and Professional Success

We have entered a new era in business. An era in which a few already established and successful companies have mastered the skills to continue to grow and innovate with the hunger and agility of startups. Alberto Savoia calls these outliers Apex Innovators. Apex Innovators don’t use their success, brand, or size as excuses for slowing down; they use them as unique advantages to accelerate innovation, explore, and win with new products–and in totally new markets, creating tornadoes in the competitive landscape.

In this presentation, Savoia will explain why and how Apex Innovators have upped the ante, rewritten the rules, and set new standards for innovation, and what portfolio managers can learn from them and apply to their own practice to join their ranks.

Yet especially in a post money market fund reform world, investors must be more discerning. Jerome Schneider will discuss the market environment in the front-end of the yield curve and explore how active short duration allocations can serve a vital role in portfolios by dampening volatility, reducing duration and increasing yields well above traditional cash vehicles.  PIMCO offers a full suite of Short Duration strategies that have the ability to preserve capital in a world of uncertainty, while still adding meaningful income and yield to portfolios.

#1.3 - Mike Arone, State Street - ETFs: The Amazon of the Asset Management Industry

We tend to hold innovators in high esteem, but often their discoveries are the result of an accident or twist of fate. This is true of many everyday items, including Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, the microwave and Post-It Notes. Twenty-five years ago, State Street Global Advisors was simply trying to solve a problem for institutional clients. In the aftermath of the 1987 stock market crash, institutional investors wanted a liquid, transparent way of trading a basket of stocks throughout the day. The method of continuous price discovery we developed helped restore institutional investor confidence in the capital markets. Little did we know at the time that it also would spawn the most disruptive investment vehicle in asset management history – the Exchange Traded Fund (ETF). This was the beginning of what has become a $3 trillion global investment phenomenon.

In this session, the creators of the ETF industry will discuss:

·        A brief history of the incredible growth in the ETF industry

·        The most common uses of ETFs in building investment portfolios

·        The next great growth areas for ETFs – active & smart beta, fixed income and growing institutional investor usage

#2.5 - Brian Scott, Vanguard - Portfolio Construction and the Role of Active Management

Investors generally choose from among four investment approaches: market capitalization- weighted exposures, static tilts, traditional active management, and alternative investments. Together, market cap-weighted exposures and static tilts create an investor’s strategic asset allocation, the crucial driver of portfolio returns.

This presentation examines the investment objectives and approaches investors can use to build their portfolios. The right solution is the intersection of the objective(s) and the appropriate approach given an investor’s unique circumstances, expertise, resources, time horizon, and tolerance for different   types of risks.

#3.1 - Elizabeth Kashner: FactSet ETF Evaluator

#3.2 - David Wang, Morningstar Equity Research - Electric Vehicles Forecast Adoption will Take Off

The market underestimates the potential for electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Bears point to high costs and low range versus internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as reasons why adoption will not take off, noting that despite much fanfare and excitement, EVs still made up less than 1% of global vehicle sales in 2015. Consensus forecasts EV adoption growing to 2%-3% by 2020 and 4%-5% by 2025—just enough to meet fuel efficiency requirements. We also see regulation as the main driver through 2020 but expect far greater adoption in subsequent years as battery technology improvements allow EVs to reach cost parity with ICEs by 2025 on the way to cost advantage in subsequent years.

The goal of this presentation is to highlight the different ways to use options in PM,  ranging from covered calls to option overwriting strategies. We will also cover when it is best to use any of the strategies above, and how best to include option portfolios in your asset allocation. Along with the best strategies and techniques to use we will also go over how PMs can best execute their trades in LYDIA (providing tips and tricks that we use daily). Implementing a “Culture of Caring” has been a cornerstone of my business where average client tenure exceeds 15 years.  This presentation will help PM Advisors establish a new service model, or improve an existing one, as a genuine, authentic, caring practice.  Execution of the service model is repeatable, and an easily delegated process. When applied consistently, the model promotes a “Culture of Caring;” enhancing referrals and long term client relationships. This session encourages audience participation.  Bring your existing service models and ideas to share and compare.

Pace goes beyond the conventional threats and predictable military responses and provides a candid look at the current threats to national security. From cyber-attacks to narco-terrorists, the defense of our nation and our allies is exponentially more complex following the attacks of 9-11, which demonstrated that America has enemies without boundaries.

Sociologist Chris DeSantis: Four Generations, One Workplace
Embracing Generational Differences

People are living longer, working longer, and changing jobs more frequently than at any other time in our history.  The workplace and the workforce are no longer what they were.  When our father’s father left the house each morning, he worked hard each day, did what the company asked, and retired when it was time to do so.  This nostalgic view of work was probably more romance than reality.  But the image left a mark on the generation that followed. Things were fine until our father was downsized, and mom got a job. This less than romantic view also left its mark on the children who followed. Events shape perceptions, perceptions become beliefs, and beliefs become the basis for our values. Welcome to the new world of work.

#5.2 - Eric Applewhite and Joseph Kairen, S&P Global - Factor Analysis in Portfolio Construction

Sponsored By: Powershares by Invesco

By analyzing the underlying exposures of stocks, funds and strategies, investors can identify which factors are providing the best risk-adjusted returns. This process is called factor analysis, and allows investors to target the inherent risks which they believe will yield the best returns. Conducting a factor analysis on a fund can explain whether its returns come from overall market exposure (relating to the market risk premium).

This is important as it is often difficult to tell why a stock or fund is performing better or worse than the market. In other words, this process helps to pinpoint the source of returns. Factors can influence the returns of passive index-tracking investments as well as actively-managed portfolios.

#5.3 - Bill Luthy and Chris Swanson, TrendRating - A Smarter Approach to Incorporating Momentum Into Your Investment Process

In this session, you will learn how to apply a systematic element to your fundamental process and learn how momentum can be incorporated into the investment process from the top down and/or bottom up.

Chaos Monkeys - A Silicon Valley Adventure

After stints on Wall Street and as CEO of his own Y Combinator startup, García Martínez joined Facebook’s nascent advertising team, turning its users’ data into profit for COO Sheryl Sandberg and chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He also fathered two children with a woman he barely knew, committed lewd acts, brewed illegal beer on the Facebook campus (accidentally flooding Zuckerberg's desk), lived on a sailboat, raced sport cars on the 101, and enthusiastically pursued the life of an overpaid Silicon Valley wastrel. 'Chaos Monkeys' is an unfiltered memoir of life inside the Silicon Valley machine, with every character named and underhanded maneuver revealed.
